Roche de Mio Engagement Ring & Box

This is my own engagement story, and it’s quite funny really; essentially we were both plotting to propose at the same time.

In the end, Mark beat me to it (by 3 weeks) and got down on one knee in the snow with my family looking on, whilst we were skiing in La Plagne, France. He’d had the ring, burning a hole in his jacket pocket for half the week, trying to find the right moment when I wasn’t dashing off down the next slope. He designed the ring himself, then asked our good friend and fellow Yorkshire Artspace jeweller Daisy Lee Jewels to make it. It’s a really special piece, I’m a very lucky lady.

I told Mark about my plan to propose to him, and decided I wanted to make him his engagement ring anyway. I knew that I wanted it to be one of my new contour map rings, but I was having trouble deciding what location it should show. Helpfully, his mountain top proposal made choosing simpler, and opted for Roche de Mio, including Belle Plagne, where were staying. The ring is made in 18ct red gold, hand engraved and set with an ethical sapphire at the summit.

Such a lovely ring needed a special box to present it in, and as I’d been playing around with box ideas before Christmas (see here for the box I made my mum) I decided it was time to go all in and make the contour map box in my imagination real.

The outside is hand engraved with the contours of the special mountain, and has space for 2 rings inside (or more, if the insert was re-configured). This one is made of copper, and will age beautifully (just like us!)

It's a lovely thing, and something I'm sure we'll treasure forever. We'll use it for our wedding rings during the ceremony, then it'll probably take up residence on our mantlepiece.

I have so many ideas of where this line of thinking can go this year, so look out for more. Of course, you can always drop me a line to discuss your own bespoke contour map commissions.
