Sheffield Opal Contour Map Wall Piece
M saw the large Sheffield map in The Yard Gallery at Leah’s Yard (Sheffield) and thought it’d make an amazing gift for his wife. After a little discussion, we decided to personalise the map with a marker for their family home along the Porter Brook. They opted to use the opal from the first ring he ever gave her in the early days of their relationship, as it no longer fitted her - but she’d had it re-set in gold and wanted it to live on in a different way. I created prongs to hold the opal in its setting on the map, and added a subtle led to backlight the piece (a special request of M’s) so that it’ll glow from behind the contours in a darkened space.
