An iconic area of outstanding natural beauty in rural England, stretching all the way from just South of Stratford-Upon-Avon in Warwickshire, to just South of Bath in Somerset.

It is in fact the largest AONB in the country, covering 787 square miles (2,038 km2). The hills are grassy and rolling, rising from the meadows of the upper River Thames to an escarpment above the Severn Valley and the Vale of Evesham. This feature, known as the Cotswold escarpment or the Cotswold Edge, is a result of the uplifting (tilting) of the limestone rock layer, exposing its broken edge. You can clearly see this in the topography of the map, the ‘spine’ of the Cotswolds running through six counties, particularly Gloucestershire, west Oxfordshire, and southwestern Warwickshire.

The making

The contours are spaced at 46m intervals, making for an extremely detailed and beautiful interpretation of the landscape.

The map itself is made from a single sheet of brass, with the contours laser cut through then shaped & finished by hand. The metal is blackened and slightly rubbed back in places, giving the piece an ‘antiqued’ look, and creating contrast when viewed from afar.

The rivers are all hand engraved, appearing as shallow golden trails cutting through the landscape.
