the peak district
Capturing memories of adventures on blustery edges and rolling moorland in a different way
The Peak District contour map, celebrating the UKs oldest national park, established in April of 1951.
The map itself is made from brass, which has been blackened and slightly rubbed back in places to reveal a warm golden glow. It features the accurate topography of the park, using contours every 90m.
A little bit more about The Peaks…
Its White Peak and Dark Peak regions, created from limestone and gritstone respectively form the iconic valleys, edges and moorlands that the area is so loved for. You won’t find any mountains here, only beautifully rugged peaks (surprise!), a name derived from the Old English word for hill: ‘peac’.
The highest point is Kinder Scout at 2,086ft (636 metres), which has quite a recognisable shape within the map due to its large flat plateau and steep flanks.
the making
The contours are spaced at 90m intervals, making for an accurate and beautiful interpretation of the landscape.
The map itself is made from a single sheet of brass, with the contours laser cut through then shaped & finished by hand. The metal is blackened and slightly rubbed back in places, giving the piece an ‘antiqued’ look, and creating contrast when viewed from afar.
The rivers are all hand engraved, appearing as shallow golden trails cutting through the landscape.
