whitby map

Whitby - a well loved seaside town on the Yorkshire coast, split through the middle by the meandering River Esk. Known for the majestic gothic ruins of the Abbey, which overlook the sea on the East Cliff and is said to be Stoker’s inspiration for ‘Dracula’, and of course, the town's world class fish & chips.

The town itself sits in a deep valley at the mouth of the River Esk. This map shows the stretch of coast from East Row at Sandsend Wyke to Saltwick Bay in the East. At the South/bottom of the map you can see the lower slopes of Sleights and Flyingdales Moors.

The contours are spaced at 10m intervals, making for an extremely detailed and beautiful interpretation of the landscape.

The map itself is made from a single sheet of brass, with the contours laser cut through then shaped & finished by hand. The metal is blackened and slightly rubbed back in places, giving the piece an ‘antiqued’ look, and creating contrast when viewed from afar.

The river is hand engraved, appearing as a shallow golden trail cutting through the landscape. The section of sea in the North is gilded with textured gold leaf, giving the ocean a shimmering glow in low light levels.
